Early In-Person Voting Begins in Michigan
The MPTA has had several conversations with the Michigan Secretary of State about promoting public transit and voter access to election sites. 2024 is the first year for early, in-person voting, which is required to be offered in all jurisdictions for at least nine days prior to the regular election day (Tuesday November 5th).
The City of Detroit’s early voting begins October 19th, followed by the East Lansing and Canton Township starting October 21st, followed by most communities starting October 26th. Please click here for more information from the MI SOS about early voting periods and locations.
There has been significant interest from the SOS and other voting advocates in promoting transit opportunities, which can include fare-free rides to the polls, modified hours and routes, or dissemination of voter education materials. Please click here for a website with ready-to-go voter information materials that transit agencies can utilize in their facilities, vehicles, or via other communications platforms.
The MPTA also encourages members to let us know of any special communications or opportunities that your agency may be providing for election rides.
