Harbor Transit Sets Annual Ridership Record

Harbor Transit's 200,000 rider.

Harbor Transit is pleased to announce that two ridership records have recently fallen helping make 2013 the busiest twelve months in the history of Tri-Cities public transportation. On Friday, November 22 Harbor Transit carried 898 passengers, a one day record. This number helped to produce ridership for the month that was 1,458 more rides than the same period of a year ago. For the twelve months ending December 31, Transit realized a 6.4% increase in ridership over the previous year resulting in a record total of 200,437 passengers for the year. Ridership was up in all major categories with the most significant increases coming from those riders 50 years of and over. Students from the various school locations throughout the service area continued to show increased volumes year over year.

“No doubt the expansion of our service area into Grand Haven Charter Township had an impact with respect to this increase,” stated Tom Manderscheid, Director of Transportation. “But we were pleased to see the other long standing areas we serve also experienced solid growth in ridership.” “In addition, the several new buses and new mini-vans have made for better service and quicker pickup times which have also helped to manage rider demand for service.” For the third consecutive year Transit has seen its ridership increase. During the last three years Harbor Transit has carried a total of 74,997 more passengers than the 125,440 transported in 2010 an overall increase of 59.8%.

MTA veterna's bus

In honor and gratitude to the men and women of the armed forces, Flint’s Mass Transportation Authority today unveiled a fully wrapped veteran’s bus. The bus wrap was sponsored by the following organizations:

  • CBS Outdoor
  • Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce,
  • Hoekstra Transportation,
  • Roush Clean Tech,
  • Sorensen Gross,
  • USSC Group

The interior of the bus has bus placards showing the history of wars the United States has fought in from the Revolutionary war to the Afghanistan War. The cards were sponsored by National Fleet Services of Michigan and Ohio and Mobility Transportation Services.

“This bus is in honor of our veterans. It’s the MTA’s way of saying thank you to those that have served in the past and those serving today,” Ed Benning, MTA General Manager said.

“It was important to share this with the community. When you have a mobile billboard, it serves as a daily reminder of how we honor our veterans. We ask that everyone take a moment and thank a veteran.”

The veteran’s bus will be on the road full year, on various routes throughout the community.

MAX Transit Dedicates and Opens New Operations Facility

The transit system for the greater Holland/Zeeland area officially dedicated and opened its new $4.7 million operations facility on Greenway Drive on Friday, Oct. 4 with a ribbon cutting ceremony and public open house attended by more than 140 guests.

“On behalf of Governor Rick Snyder and the state of Michigan, I'd like to say how proud we are of all your accomplishments. The MAX has come a long way from the ‘Dial-A-Ride’ service that started in 1974,” said Kirk Steudle, director of the Michigan Department of Transportation, who attended the event and spoke on behalf of Governor Rick Snyder.

“Your work ethic and positive attitude have made all of this a reality,” he continued. “This facility that will not only serve customers better, it will improve employee morale and employee engagement. That’s huge. That’s immeasurable.”

Others speaking at the dedication ceremony included former Congressman Pete Hoekstra, who helped secure federal seed earmarks for the project, State Senator Arlan Meekhof, Greg Van Woerkom, district director for Congressman Bill Huizenga, Clark Harder, executive director of the Michigan Public Transit Association, Russ TeSlaa, MAX Board president, and MAX Director Linda LeFebre.

Following the ceremonial ribbon cutting, the Greenway facility was opened to the public for lunch and tours. MAX also operated a free shuttle from the Padnos Transfer Center to the new Greenway facility to assist transit-dependent passengers in getting to the open house.

The facility was funded with 80 percent federal capital grants and 20 percent matching state funds. The new 33,500 sq. ft. facility includes an inside bus storage for 28 buses, a conference/training center, central dispatch, office areas, driver lounge and patio, and locker room area. DLZ of Lansing designed the building, which was constructed by Lakewood Construction of Holland.
